Humble African Trust is a small community trust in Victoria Falls. We put art, craft and skills training at the centre of village life — and we open the doors to volunteers who want to work alongside us.
We start by listening. Every project here began as a conversation with the people who live in Monde.
Nothing is done for the community. Workshops, builds and exhibitions are run with local artists and families.
Visitors are welcome — on our terms and the community’s. Come to work, stay long enough to matter.
Humble African Trust was founded by the artist Dingulwazi Khoza — Dingx to everyone who knows him — out of a simple conviction: creative work is not a luxury at the edge of community development. It is a way into it.
A child who learns to draw learns to look. A young adult who learns to carve, sew or print learns a trade. A village with a place to make things has a place to meet.
We are small. We work slowly, locally, and with the people who live here.
A studio, a public art centre, a training programme, conservation work made in paint and scrap, an artists’ exchange, and the heritage the whole thing is built on.
A working centre where local artists make, exhibit and sell. Our pre-launch exhibition opened to the community over three days in August 2024.
The studio at the heart of the Trust: painting, mixed media and one-to-one mentorship for artists finding their own voice.
Practical workshops for young people and adults — craft, making, and the unglamorous business of selling what you make.
Monde sits a short drive from Victoria Falls — Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders — a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and the busiest visitor destination in this part of Africa.
Hundreds of thousands of people come every year for the river, the gorges and the game. Very few of them ever reach the villages behind the town. Closing that distance — carrying the work out to the market, and bringing visitors in to meet the people who made it — is most of what the Trust is for.
We are actively looking for painters, printmakers, ceramicists, muralists and photographers to spend real time here — working beside the artists of Monde, going out into the villages, and seeing the Falls from the inside.
No fee either way. You bring your practice; we bring the place.
You need to be useful, and willing to stay long enough to be worth teaching.
Volunteers here paint and build, help run workshops, keep the gardens alive, photograph the work, mend what breaks and sit through long conversations in the shade. It is not a tour. It is a job you aren’t paid for, in a place that will change how you see things.
Brushes wear out. Canvas runs out. A workshop that has to stop halfway through because the paint is finished teaches a child the wrong lesson.
You can back a workshop, send materials, buy a piece of work, or partner with us as a lodge, school or tour operator.
